Skills
What is a skill?
A skill is a label you create in Time & Resource Management to describe what a person can do — for example “Front-end”, “Design”, “Copywriting”, or “Project management”. Each skill has a name, a color, an optional description, and a set of resources (the people who have that skill).
Skills are shared across your whole organization. Once a skill exists, you can attach it to any resource, see at a glance who can take on which kind of work, and filter your resources by the skills you need.
Where to find Skills
- In the left sidebar, click Time & Resource Management to expand it.
- Choose Skills.
This opens the skills overview (/tr/skills).
The skills overview
The list shows the following columns per skill:
| Column | Content |
|---|---|
| Name | The skill name, with its color shown as a colored dot |
| Created by | The team member who created the skill, shown as an avatar badge |
| Resources | The people assigned to this skill, shown as avatars |
| Description | The skill’s description (if any) |
| Updated at | When the skill was last changed |
At the top of the list you can:
- Search — type in the search bar to find skills by name (partial match).
- Sort — by Name, Updated at, or Created at, ascending or descending.
The overview is paginated; you can choose how many skills to show per page.
Adding a skill
- Click Create (the + button) in the top right.
- Fill in the details:
- Name — (required) up to 60 characters.
- Color — (required) pick one of the predefined colors or enter your own hex value (for example
#957BF9). The color shows as a dot next to the skill everywhere it appears. - Resources — (optional) select the people who have this skill. The list shows each person’s name and avatar.
- Description — (optional) free text, up to 500 characters.
- Click Create to save.
Give each skill a distinct color. The colored dot (and the colored badge shown on resources) makes skills easy to recognize at a glance across the overview.
Color
Every skill has a color, which is required. Choose from the predefined palette or enter a custom hex value. The color appears as a small dot next to the skill name in the skills overview, and as a colored badge in the Skills column on the resources overview — so it’s worth picking a color that helps the skill stand out.
Assigning skills to resources
There are two ways a skill becomes attached to a resource:
- From the skill — when you create a skill, use the Resources field to pick the people who have it.
- From the resource — open a resource and use its Skills field to add or remove skills for that one person. This is the place to change who has a skill after the skill already exists.
The Resources field on a skill is used when you first create the skill. Editing a skill changes its name, color, and description — not the people assigned to it. To change who has an existing skill, edit the resource and update its Skills field instead.
How skills are used
Skills connect people to the work they’re suited for:
- On the resources overview, the Skills column shows each person’s skills as colored badges.
- The skills filter on that overview narrows the list to everyone who has the selected skills — useful when you need to find who can take on a specific kind of work before you create a booking or distribute work in resource allocation .
The avatars in the Resources column of the skills overview give you the mirror view: for a given skill, who can deliver it.
Editing a skill
- In the overview, select exactly one skill with its checkbox.
- In the action bar at the bottom, click Edit.
- Change the Name, Color, or Description.
- Click Save to apply your changes.
Searching and sorting
- Use the search bar to filter the list by skill name. Searching matches part of the name, so you don’t need to type it in full.
- Use the sort option to order skills by Name, Updated at, or Created at, ascending or descending.
Deleting skills
- In the overview, select one or more skills with the checkboxes.
- In the action bar at the bottom, click Delete.
- Confirm in the confirmation dialog.
Deleting removes the skill from your overview and from the resources it was assigned to. Make sure the skill is no longer in use before you delete it.
Permissions
What you can do with skills depends on your role and access to the Time & Resource Management module. If you don’t see a button — such as Create, Edit, or Delete — you’re missing the matching access. Ask your administrator if you need it.
